Schrödinger’s Knee: Healing The Pain Habit Through Mindset and Movement

Remember Schrödinger’s cat—that famous quantum physics thought experiment where the cat in the box is both alive and dead at the same time, until you open the lid and “observe” it? That’s kind of how my knees used to function. Every morning, as I climbed out of bed, we were all in total suspense (me and both knees). Will taking a step unleash sharp stabs, or will it feel like a glorious, pain-free miracle? Both realities existed… until I actually stood up and collapsed the wave function.

Before you get out of bed or think “ugh, hope this bitch doesn’t ruin my day,” pause. Deep breaths. Play the ‘what if’ game: What if it feels great? What if last night’s sleep healed you a ton? What if you just hit the gym and saw what happened—instead of skipping weighted lunge day yet again?

I dubbed this situation “Schrödinger’s Knee” because I realized that my brain lived in this quantum limbo situation about my knees every day. My mindset and expectations played a huge role in which reality showed up. Turns out my fears about pain was wreaking havoc on the reality I was experiencing! I finally decided I needed to create a whole new reality where my knees felt strong, capable, and pain free.

    The Distorted History

Somewhere in the corporate grind, my knees turned into full-time assholes. They hurt constantly doing basic human shit: half-assed workouts 3x a week, climbing in/out of my car, trying to strut around the office in heels like it wasn’t excruciating.

Two badass knees with mean faces holding weapons
Picture this if you ever think you have bad knees!

Corporate Finance Amy had zero clue she was torching herself—and her knees—with zero real exercise, extra weight, and an inflammatory AF diet loaded with seed oils, processed junk, and booze. Joints screaming like the Tinman begging for oil. She thought 30 minutes of moderate cardio counted as “working out.” Laughable—it’s way below minimum standards but she wasn’t ready to hear that.

Worst part? She swallowed the generational BS that being in your 40s means slowing down and getting softer. What the actual F? That’s the granddaddy of all excuses not to try – just wearing those old age glasses as his disguise.

    Daily Choices Matter

Why wake up dreading the joint drama—bracing for a punishing workout and limping all day? Flip the script. Wake up in the new reality you’re building… and keep building it before your feet hit the floor.

Don’t let your brain block unlimited possibility with old stories. That “bad knees” tale might’ve protected you from hurting yourself and pushing too hard—or from fully showing up. Either way, it’s kept you small.

    Healing Episodes

In 2025, mid-gap year(s), I learned physical healing is tangled up with mental and spiritual growth. I’ve been diving into new practices, like breathwork with my fave healer Jenna Paige at Surya Yoga (my new zen home).

Breathwork, for the uninitiated, is basically a guided session where you lie down, breathe in specific deep and rhythmic patterns (think faster and fuller than your usual shallow corporate zombie breaths), often with epic music blasting to amp up the emotional release and altered-state vibes. It’s wild how something as simple as breathing on purpose can unlock buried shit and spark healing—like therapy on steroids, but with zero talking.

Breathwork = getting high on your own supply (of breath)

I’m a breathwork newbie but keep showing up for the magic. You set an intention upfront. Mine shifted one day to: “Help me understand why part of me still feels ‘not good enough’ for me to take the BEST care of my body”.

The second we started, warm electric buzzing hit both knees—like they were being cradled and healed by invisible hands. I leaned in and let it ride (because when the universe offers knee rehab, you say thank you).

Then the downloads came: direct, loving, no-BS messages zapping in milliseconds. One wrecked me: “Your constant focus on knee pain is your self-tether. It keeps you from living big and building the strong body needed for your life’s work. You’ve been pretending to try while holding yourself down. It’s a big fat lie. You could launch yourself into the sun with the power you’ve got.”

Visual that popped in? Me strapped to Earth with a thick green gym band around my hips, flailing to jump free (and failing). Have you ever seen how big and burly those bands are? Like 2 inches thick and can hold up the weight of a large man.

It looked ridiculous the way the image popped into my mind, and would have made me laugh if it hadn’t been so immensely sad at the same time. This whole time it was me holding me back? Flood of tears.

Days later, I read Soul Speak by Julia Cannon—perfect timing. Her book is a veritable dictionary of what different parts of the body are trying to tell you. Sometimes they whisper and you have to listen hard to decipher, and sometimes they scream, cry, and call you the worst swears for trying to be active. Turns out knee pain symbolically ties to flexibility, humility, pride, and moving forward. Pain = your higher self yelling “pay attention and growww.”

    Lunging Forward

Post-download, workouts flipped. I’d always skipped lunge day—weighted lunges were a 12/10 pain nightmare.

But after a real talk with my PT bestie, Doc Martin, we tweaked my form (squats juuust past parallel while laser focused on building leg and joint strength). Life-changing: stronger, minimal pain, actually doing moves I’d labeled “hard effing pass” in the preceding months. Turns out just because I was flexible enough to hit the way bottom of a squat didn’t mean I was strong enough to do it repeatedly (yet).

Cue recent workout: lunges everywhere. Old me = “Oh hells no”, New me: “What if I showed up for lunge workouts and just… did them (without bitching or hedging)?”

This felt like Lunge Queen vibes

Holy cow what a difference. Crushed the double-under practice time (previous knee kryptonite), then did a million front-rack weighted lunges. Zero pain. Lifetime PR. Mojo found in a movement I’d dodged forever.

Your body listens. Your mind’s the DJ. Play better tunes.

  • Time Theory in Thailand: Celebrating Bodhi Tree Day and Enlightenment Vibes

Time Theory in Thailand: Celebrating Bodhi Tree Day and Enlightenment Vibes

Hey wanderlusters, this is another episode of time freedom smashing face-first into epic travel epiphanies. It’s about ditching the 9-to-5 grind to chase sunsets and those “holy shit” moments that rewrite your soul’s calendar. Today, on Bodhi Tree Day (December 8th), the sacred Buddhist holiday celebrating Siddhartha Gautama’s full-blown enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, I’m breaking down the history, the magic, and how it completely wrecked (in the best way) my understanding of time during our Thailand trip. Buckle up—this one’s a fever dream of ancient wisdom, mango sticky rice, and cosmic connections.

The Roots of Bodhi Tree Day: History and Why It Matters

2,600 years ago in Bodh Gaya, India, Siddhartha sat under a massive sacred fig tree for 49 days, stared down every inner demon, and boom—enlightenment. He became the Buddha and dropped the Four Noble Truths + Eightfold Path like the ultimate life cheat-code for ending suffering. Bodhi Tree Day is the anniversary party for that mind-blowing “I get it now” moment. It’s all about meditation, kindness, compassion, and flipping on your inner light. In Thailand, they took it next level: their entire calendar (Buddhist Era, BE) starts counting from that exact enlightenment. 2025 for us? 2568 BE for them. Time isn’t just ticking—it’s a tribute to waking the fuck up.

When Chuck Norris Crashed Our Bodhi Vibes: Discovering Thailand’s Time Twist

We were two weeks deep in Thailand, soaking up that effortless Thai harmony—scooters with entire families + dogs + groceries weaving through traffic like it’s no big deal, random water buffalo chilling roadside, smiles everywhere. Then one night at the open-air bar at Hua Hin Marriott, a few Chang beers in, we’re discussing how old Chuck Norris actually is. I Google Machine it… March 10, 2483 BE. Record scratch. What the actual hell? That single search cracked everything open: Thailand adds ~543 years to honor the Buddha’s awakening. Suddenly Chuck Norris became our accidental Bodhi Tree Day guru, reminding us time freedom isn’t about more vacation days—it’s about measuring life in awakenings instead of deadlines.

Living the Enlightenment: Our Thai Gap Year Highlights

We lived it: throwing elbows at Elite Fight Club and Punch It Gym, staying jacked at CrossFit Hua Hin, getting monk-blessed bracelets while monkeys tried to steal our water bottles, night-market feasting, $1.47 Grab rides everywhere, and that rainy elephant banana feeding session at Monsoon Valley Winery that still makes me tear up. Fight nights at Petchabuncha Stadium with tiger balm in the air, free Chang beers when the AC died, jeep safaris with new Euro friends—every single day felt like the universe winking and saying, “See? This is what presence feels like.”

Why Bodhi Tree Day Matters for Your Gap Year: Time to Awaken

Bodhi Tree Day is the ultimate gap-year permission slip: stop counting years like a corporate slave and start counting awakenings. That’s the real flex.

So here’s your mission, should you choose to accept it:

    1. Follow @gapyearwithamy on IG for daily doses of this exact chaos.
    2. Make a top 10 list of places you feel drawn to explore (so you stop dreaming and start planning).
    3. Drop your biggest “holy shit” travel awakening in the comments right now—I read every single one.

Your Bodhi Tree is waiting. Go sit under it (or book the damn flight).

  • Partner Cooking is Straight-up Life

    Partner Cooking is Straight-up Life

It’s the absolute best. You’re working toward one gloriously delicious goal, divvying up the glamorous jobs (rolling pasta) and the soul-crushing ones (scrubbing the cheese grater). You’re laughing, learning new tricks from each other, and—let’s be honest—quietly judging technique while some 2010-era hip-hop or total silence blasts in the background. Whatever floats your shared boat, as long as it ends with everyone stuffed and happy.

Making legit meals from scratch has approximately 9,472 steps, which is exactly why doing it as a team is pure magic. Planning the menu, hunting down ingredients, deciding who’s on onion duty (the true test of love), and timing everything so the pasta isn’t mush while the sauce is still cold… it’s a full-on partner WOD.

    Delicious Steak and Mushroom Soup

How to Turn Your Kitchen Into a Partner Style Workout

At Wildfire CrossFit we’re experienced with partner workouts—“you go, I go,” trading burpees and encouragement (or playful trash talk). Turns out the exact same concept is undefeated in the kitchen. One person sears the grass-fed ribeye while the other makes the chimichurri. You rest when they work, you cheer when they almost burn the garlic, and somehow dinner comes out perfect and you both feel like absolute legends.

How to Pick Your Kitchen Partner (Choose Wisely or Suffer Hilariously)

You can do this with literally anyone who isn’t a total liability with a chef’s knife: spouse, best friend, neighbor you’re trying to convert to the no-seed-oil cult, your sibling who owes you from 2009. Skill levels don’t even matter that much—just attitudes. I’ve cooked with pros in many different kitchens AND with friends who think “julienne” is a French girl’s name. Some sessions were comedy gold, some were… lessons in patience lmaooo. Choose your partner wisely, but always, ALWAYS choose to have fun and not take it too seriously.

    Zero Seed Oils, Maximum Gains

We go hard on fresh, organic ingredients because there’s zero reason to spend two hours cooking just to drown everything in inflammatory garbage. Maximum flavor, maximum nutrients, maximum post-dinner pump. Your body and your taste buds both hit a PR. Seriously, convenience foods like packaged breads, crackers, bottled dressings are FULL of disgusting bullshit. Please just make your own – it’s super easy and I promise that I’ll help.

So easy to make your own and avoid poisons!

Local Beer = Secret Weapon (and We’re Not Gatekeeping)

Pro tip from your favorite gap-year chefs: swap water for local craft beer in basically everything and thank us when you hit flavor nirvana. Tortilla dough made with a spicy green chili ale from Fate Brewing? Stupidly tender. Pizza dough fermented with a crisp lager from Lake Pleasant Brewing? Next-level chew and tang. French onion soup deglazed with a roasty porter from Kitsune Brewing? I need a minute. And don’t even get me started on chocolate stout brownies or milk-stout ice cream floats for dessert—your taste buds will file for divorce from anything else. Supporting local brewers while getting a subtle buzz into the food? That’s not cheating, that’s winning at life. Grab a six-pack next time you’re meal prepping and watch your “healthy” dinner turn legendary.

    Kitsune Brewing!

Why This Style of Partner Meal Prep is Elite

    • You only cook when you’re in a good mood → everything tastes better
    • You get to add rich flavor layers as you go instead of panic-salting at the end
    • Two sets of hands = twice the fun, half the time
    • Leftovers level-up instead of going downhill (reheat a slice of that homemade lasagna and tell me you’re not happy)
    • You get to make out mid-stir because nobody’s rushing to a Zoom
    • Your coworkers (aka your cats) become jealous of your lunch and that’s a power move
    Lake Pleasant Brewing!

Our Simple System When Time is No Longer the Enemy

    1. Choose Your Co-Conspirator(s): Spouse, bestie, sibling, neighbor who owes you a favor—doesn’t matter. Just make sure they’re fun (especially when hungry)
    2. Pick the Window: Saturday morning or Wednesday night—whatever time slot feels like a treat, not a chore.
    3. Make Something Ambitious (Because You Finally Can) Normal life: “Let’s do tacos—takes 15 minutes.” Time-freedom life: “Let’s slow cook a roast, knead our own tortillas, and make three salsas from scratch because it’s Tuesday.”
    4. OR Choose One Big Sexy Thing + One Easy Support Act. Example meals we rotate:
    • Steak and Wild Rice Soup + fresh garlic knots
    • Green chile chicken enchiladas + homemade fresh tortillas
    • Smash-burger patties + brioche buns from scratch + burger sauce that ruins fast food forever
    • Homemade ravioli (yes really) + brown-butter sage sauce.
    1. Shop Like Civilized Humans: I keep a running Albertsons cart on my phone. When the menu is decided, I hit “buy”, schedule for delivery, and we’re golden. → Steal my expert trick here: https://www.albertsons.com
    2. Divide & Conquer Like You Actually Like Each Other: He sears like a boss, creates glorious sauces, trims raw meats and anything that otherwise grosses me out. I do all the dough, breads, and aggressively flavored butters. Find your lanes and protect them with your life.
    3. Eat the First Portion Together That Night: Because you deserve to taste it fresh and hot while wearing sweatpants and giving zero forks.
    4. Save leftovers for the next meal or to play a supporting role in the next creation; portion out meals to take on the go or freeze.

  • Three Lessons From My Blog’s First Feedback

Three Lessons From My Blog’s First Feedback

Buckle up for some real talk about the early feedback on my Gap Year With Amy (GYWA) blog. It’s been a learning project putting this blog together, and gathering reactions was a fun next step. I’m excited to share the love, laughs, and light bulb moments that came from my family and homies diving into my posts. Let’s unpack the solid gold they dropped, and how it’s fueling my mission to help others create their own big, beautiful lives.

Heartfelt Thanks for the Feedback Love

I’m bursting with gratitude for my closest peeps who didn’t just skim my blog but read it, like, multiple times and gave me their unfiltered thoughts. That’s love. Giving honest feedback isn’t easy—it’s like grading your best friend’s homework. Their love and wisdom handed me three electric takeaways: my storytelling’s hitting home, my CTAs need work, and my gap-year glow-up is surprising even to my inner circle. Here’s how it’s shaping the Gap Year Movement.

    The Power of Storytelling

Stories are the best. They’re like time machines, letting us soak up the wisdom of authors from centuries ago. Sometimes they help us relive (and review) our own highs and lows with fresh eyes. But the real magic? Stories connect us, sharing messages that stick and spark something deep.

Writing from the heart isn’t always easy. Baring your soul means risking the “What if they hate it?” spiral. What if it’s too much? Too braggy? Too me? And sometimes you get feedback that feels really personal because you’ve put your person out there to be judged. Frankly, I put my person out there to be judged about a million times a day in my corporate career so this shouldn’t be a new type of scary. But it IS because this story is about me and how I’m living my life rather than about clients, crew, and spreadsheets. But hey, screw the spiral—hit publish anyway, because the ones who vibe will stick around for the ride, and the haters? They can keep scrolling. You got this, heart on sleeve and all.

I’m just finished reading The Holographic Universe and it has me thinking: If life is just a projection or hologram of my own imagining, why not make mine effing spectacular? I’m here to listen, write and tell some epic stories that light up souls—mine included.

P.S. 10/10 recommend The Holographic Universe and reading books in general.

    WTF is a CTA?

Two of my favorites asked, “What are your CTAs?” and I was seriously like, “WTF is a CTA”? Turns out it means “Call to Action” in case you were also in the dark. Y’all, I legit don’t recall hearing that term, which is comedy gold after 25 years in the corporate grind. Guess my gap year brain has officially unsubscribed from the business jargon newsletter.

Regardless, the CTA question is a damn good one! My blog’s all about inspiring you to live big, so here’s the Call To Action: Sign up for my weekly newsletter to get fresh stories and tips, and follow me on your fave social platforms for new post alerts. It’s your ticket to joining this gap year adventure and snagging ideas for your own epic life blueprint.

    The Many Faces We Wear

This feedback threw me for a loop. I got a couple of laughing tone shocked questions about things I had written. It was like they were trying to figure out if I exaggerated my face off in these posts, or if I really was this person having a whole new set of experiences.

Here’s a wild realization: Everyone’s got their own version of you in their head. It’s like Don Miguel Ruiz shares in The Fifth Agreement, everyone in your life sees you as a different version of yourself because they are looking at you through their own personal lens and experiences in the world. This means that your mom sees you as one person, your dad might see you totally differently, your sister has yet a different idea, and your husband might not recognize any of those versions.

    The New and Improved Version

So when my crew was shocked to learn new things about me, it hit me—obvi, they don’t know this Amy, truly-living-and-enjoying-life Amy. For 25 years, I was Corporate Amy and Mom Amy, juggling kids, pets, family, and a demanding full-time job. Free time? Ha! I was lucky to sneak in a workout a couple times a week, pick up my dry cleaning before it went to dry cleaning jail, and not let the dogs starve. My reading list was all business, leadership, and finance sales books. Snoooooooze.

It tracks that folks didn’t know that I loved to read, write, and develop language skills. Friends were surprised by my new interest in weight lifting and CrossFit (in their defense I was a regular attendee at happy hour with a plate of nachos). My parents were stunned to learn that I had changed my eating habits so much that it rewired my taste buds and created a new enjoyment of worldly cuisines.

    Forging ahead to new dimensions!

So yeah, now I’m obsessed with learning new languages, getting that first strict pull-up, and delicious new flavors like Thai Food, crab cakes, and green olives stuffed with jalapenos. Why? Because I’m not the same Amy who played it safe and stuck to a predictable routine. The gap year experience has been a revolution—new places, new perspectives, new passions. Why stick to the same old when I’ve rewritten the script? I’m out here sipping brews in new cities, hiking trails I’d never heard of, and saying yes to flavors I used to dodge. It’s not just change; it’s a full-on reinvention.

Hot tip: If you’re feeling stuck in your “old version,” try one small change this week—like trying a new food or hobby. It sparks that inner revolution.

    Chasing That Big, Beautiful Life

At my core, I believe everyone deserves a life that’s big, fat, and unbelievably beautiful. To me that’s time and financial freedom to live your way, soaking up new perspectives and finding magic in the everyday. I didn’t always live like that, though. Corporate Amy was all about the hustle—climbing the ladder, leading teams, mastering the inbox, and trying to deliver workplace psych without it being cringe. It was a great experience… until it wasn’t. One day, that Corporate Amy character closed her laptop confidently and said, “Fuck it, I’m done with this chapter.”

Now, I’m all about chasing what lights me up—spending time with people who vibe with my energy, noticing the Universe’s little winks, like a perfect sunset or a stranger’s kind smile. Take last month, for example: we got on the wrong train in Germany cursing our error, only to meet the kindest drunken strangers on their way home from Oktoberfest. We spoke broken English, German, Spanish, and got a few Czech lessons. We ate delicious Indian Food in the middle of the night and spoke German to train attendants serving beers to console us on our rookie mistake.

That’s the kind of magic I’m talking about. This gap year’s shown me that life’s too short to play small. Whether it’s trying painting, booking a last-minute trip, or savoring a slow morning coffee, I’m here for it all.

Your Turn to Spark a Revolution

So, that’s the scoop from my blog’s early feedback—stories that hit home, a crash course in CTAs, and a reminder that we’re all works in progress. My gap year’s taught me to lean into the scary, soul-baring stuff and embrace the new versions of me popping up. What’s one step you’re taking toward your big, beautiful life? Drop it in the comments—I’m here to cheer you on like a hype squad at a pep rally.

Oh, and don’t sleep on this: Join the newsletter for weekly doses of gap year inspo, and follow me on socials to catch new posts. Let’s make our hologram projections epic together!

  • Oregon Coast Magic: A Gap Year Adventure of Seafood, Nature, and Cosmic Winks

Oregon Coast Magic: A Gap Year Adventure of Seafood, Nature, and Cosmic Winks

Y’all, the Oregon Coast Stole My Heart (and I’m Not Mad About It)

The Oregon Coast just swept me off my feet, and I’m still buzzing from this gap year adventure. It was a whirlwind of untamed nature, quirky hidden gems, and strangers dropping wisdom like it was no big deal. This trip reminded me why I hit pause on the grind: to chase time freedom, soak up wonder, and let the universe guide the way. Here’s how it went down.

Nature’s Got My Soul on Fire

The Oregon Coast feels like stepping into a dream (and a throwback to my childhood adventures here with family). Ancient pines tower over cliffs, their scent blending with salty air as the Pacific roars below. We wandered miles of beaches—some sandy, some rocky—gawking at sea stacks like Haystack Rock standing proud in the surf. Mornings greeted us with thick fog, wrapping the world in mystery as we grabbed coffee and planned the day’s explorations. It was colder than we expected in July, but we loved zipping up jackets and feeling the mist kiss our faces (no ordinary fog here—it’s like the coast’s secret sauce).

By afternoon, warm sunshine broke through, turning the waves into a turquoise sparkle-fest. Even the rain in Newport felt like a gentle hug from the sky, urging us to look up and give thanks. And those snow-capped mountains in the distance? They grounded me, reminding me how tiny my worries are compared to nature’s epic grandeur.

Seafood Adventures: Mason’s Heaven, My New Interest…

This trip was kind of a seafood extravaganza, especially for Mason, our resident connoisseur who could live on shellfish and sushi. I’m a total transformation when it comes to eating seafood. As a kid and young adult I could not stand the thought, smell, or sight of seafood. During my time gapping many things have changed, including my palate. I now eat (and crave!) all sorts of things I would never have allowed near my plate previously, and LOVE them. On this trip it was crab cakes with a crispy golden crust, halibut fish and chips that flaked just right, and salmon so buttery it melted in my mouth. Each bite felt like a step toward a bolder palate, and sharing these meals with Mason, who adores seafood and geeks out over every flavor, made it even sweeter. The local brews we sipped alongside? Pure coastal bliss.

From seafood skeptic to crab cake convert!

    Off-the-Beaten-Path Vibes

We ditched the tourist traps for hidden gems that felt like ours alone. Segments of the Oregon Coast Trail offered easy access, parking, and quick escapes into lush forests. Lighthouses, historical markers, and cheese factories landed on our “let’s check this out!” list, blending fun, exploration, and a peek into the land’s history. These spots let us breathe, no rush, no agenda—just the tide’s rhythm and our curiosity calling the shots. This gap year freedom means I can chase these moments, letting the day unfold however it wants. These quiet adventures set the stage for the real magic: the people we met.

Chasing hidden gems on the Oregon Coast

    Strangers Dropping Wisdom Bombs

The people we met were straight-up magic.

At the Hertz counter, a chill agent cracked dad jokes with every customer, unbothered by the line of 847 impatient travelers. He spotted our matching NASA t-shirts (our fave travel tradition!) and sparked a chat about space, writing, and books. Before I knew it, he’d recommended two life-changing reads by Isabel Allende—Paula (her memoir) and The House of the Spirits. I added them to my Amazon cart that night, trusting the universe’s nudge.

I love a good (and mysterious) book rec…

At Rendezvous Bar & Grill, we stumbled on a breakfast spot with killer food and even better owners. Chatting with them, we discovered shared roots in their past careers, and they spilled the tea on owning a bar restaurant. Funny thing? That morning, Mason and I had been brainstorming investment ideas in the brewery scene. Talk about cosmic timing.

Then there was Uncle Sean at The Meridian Restaurant. Over a gorgeous dinner, he shared his wild story of moving to the coast, meeting a woman who needed a renter and caretaker for her beachside home, and eventually inheriting it for his stellar care. His advice? “Never underestimate the universe’s magic—extend trust, and you’ll receive in abundance.” These chance encounters felt like little winks from the cosmos, urging us to stay open and keep exploring.

One Last Wave from the Coast

The Oregon Coast reminded me why I took this leap: to taste new flavors, wander hidden trails, and let strangers’ wisdom light my way. Whether it’s a year or a weekend, I’m begging you to carve out time for your own adventure. Here’s your action item: Pick one new place within a day’s drive and spend a few hours exploring—no plan, just vibes. What’s calling you? Share your dream destination in the comments or tell me about a stranger who dropped some wisdom on you. Let’s keep the gap year energy flowing!

As I stood on a misty Oregon beach, watching the waves crash and the fog lift, I felt it: this is what gap year freedom is all about. It’s not just about the places you go—it’s about trusting the journey, savoring the unexpected, and letting the world surprise you. So go chase your own slice of magic. The universe is waiting to deliver.

xoxo Amy – your professional gap year guide and lover of the Oregon Coast

  • A Gap Year of Extended Travel: Ditch the Grind, Find Your Soul

A Gap Year of Extended Travel: Ditch the Grind, Find Your Soul

Picture this: a Sedona sunrise sets the red rocks ablaze, whispering secrets to your soul, or the electric buzz of a Thai night market, where every scent and sound sparks something new. That’s the magic of a gap year built on extended travel—a chance to break free from the corporate hamster wheel, wander from Koh Samui’s beaches to Spain’s high-speed trains to Ireland’s misty pubs, and rediscover who you are when a traditional job isn’t calling the shots. I’m a former finance exec who traded 6am-to-7pm corporate life for the Gap Year Movement, and let me tell you: a gap year isn’t just a string of vacations. It’s a radical act of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and freedom from the grind.

    Why a Gap Year?

Stepping away from the daily grind doesn’t just clear your head—it rewires it. Burned out from endless meetings and a calendar so packed I couldn’t even sneak a bathroom break sometimes, I needed a reset. My gap year delivered. Lingering in Ireland’s countryside, soaking up pub stories from locals without a deadline, I found clarity no office could offer. The Gap Year Association says 90% of gap year takers report higher life satisfaction, and I’m living proof. Travel builds resilience and adaptability—skills you can’t learn in a cubicle farm. Worried about money or judgy coworkers? Save 1.5–2x your estimated expenses for peace of mind and tell the naysayers to take a hike. This is about you reclaiming your life.

    Crafting Your Gap Year Itinerary

Planning a gap year is like painting a masterpiece—bold adventures balanced with quiet moments. Mix vibrant spots like Thailand’s Chiang Mai (long-term rentals galore) or Costa Rica’s eco-lodges with urban vibes (Nashville’s music scene) and nature’s calm (Oregon Coast’s foggy beaches). Blend solo exploration, group tours, or a Caribbean cruise for easy island-hopping. Pace yourself to avoid burnout—slow travel in Spain’s tapas bars or Flagstaff’s pine forests lets you feel the moment. Pro tip: Use apps like Grok for real-time destination ideas or gap year planners to map your journey.

    The Journey > The Destination

Travel isn’t about checking off landmarks like a manic tourist. It’s about the experiences, the people, and the unexpected magic. Stay open-minded, and the universe delivers—like stumbling into a hidden Thai café or chatting with locals in an Irish pub about their lives. Notice the air on your skin, the scent of a new place, and ask, “How does my soul feel here?” My first gap year mixed dream destinations (Thailand, Costa Rica), family adventures (Hawaii, Oregon), business stops (Nashville, Orlando), and close-to-home magic (Sedona, Redwoods). Here’s a taste of what’s possible:

    • Hawaii: Hike volcanic trails and soak up Polynesian culture. Gap Year Tip: Hit multiple islands with inter-island flights to maximize your exploration and take in the diversity of the Islands.
    • Thailand: Vibrant markets and spiritual retreats are aplenty. Gap Year Tip: Base in Chiang Mai for long-term rentals and active location.
    • Costa Rica: Surf, zip-line, or meditate in lush jungles. Gap Year Tip: Find a place you can relax to the fullest and forget the rest.
    • Sedona, Arizona: Stargaze or hike among the red rocks for spiritual clarity. Gap Year Tip: Join a Sedona vortex tour for soul-searching.
    The sweetest souls!

    The Gap Year Mindset

A gap year isn’t an escape—it’s about prioritizing experiences over career checkboxes. Navigating Thailand’s chaotic streets without knowing the language? That’s resilience. Sharing stories with Spanish locals using high school Spanish (shoutout to Mason!)? That’s global awareness. Crashing through Costa Rican jungles on a zip-line? That’s me conquering my fear of heights (OMG, what a rush). In Sedona, red rock hikes sparked the idea for the Gap Year Movement. This mindset shift—valuing growth over grind—changes everything.

Sitting out a rainstorm in a Costa Rican jungle bar

Easing Back Without Losing the Vibe

Re-entering “real life” doesn’t mean diving back into a soul-sucking job. Your gap year is about finding what lights your soul on fire and gives you purpose. Reflect, volunteer, or freelance to keep the spark alive. Financially, plan for freedom: my budget covered 36 months of travel without skimping, and side hustles like travel blogging or teaching English abroad can keep cash flowing. Build connections—locals in Spain or expats in Thailand can open unexpected doors. Your gap year’s skills—adaptability, cultural fluency—make you a powerhouse for whatever’s next, whether it’s freelancing or starting your own movement.

    Ready to Leap?

Your gap year is your canvas. Paint it with Oahu’s waves, Ireland’s pubs, or wherever your soul pulls you. Let travel reshape you, one adventure at a time. The world’s calling—answer it, and let’s make some magic happen.

  • Kneading Joy: Baking, Flavors, and Finding My Fire

Kneading Joy: Baking, Flavors, and Finding My Fire

I’ve always loved kitchen time, baking bread, crafting desserts, and creating dishes that unite people. During my gap year, I swapped finance stress for flour-dusted counters, transforming my kitchen into a creative haven. With my husband, my flavor-savvy partner, I experimented with all the different kinds of breads, zesty vinaigrettes, and infused butters. Each recipe sparked joy, deepening my passion for culinary arts and revealing life’s possibilities.

From Good to Great: Elevating Breads and Flavors

Cooking was always a joy, but a demanding job left little time for kitchen experimentation. With teenagers at home, the pressure to avoid risky recipes was real—time was too scarce to gamble on new spices ruining dinner. However, a gap year filled with endless hours dreaming up ideas, testing bold flavor combinations, and sharing creations with family and friends transformed my approach.

Our Phoenix herb garden sparked inspiration, with rosemary and thyme elevating savory sandwich breads, comforting soups, and vibrant sauces. As my confidence grew, I blended tangy salad dressings and baked havarti-studded sourdough, now a household favorite. Cooking and baking became a creative outlet, where intuition and inspiration merged to craft unforgettable dishes. My new found time freedom allowed me to dive deeper, honing my craft and discovering the joy of flavors (and hobbies!).

    Why Bread is My Soulmate

My new found creative hobby sparked a full-on obsession with bread-making, and it’s become the heart of my next big adventure: launching “Any Way You Knead It,” my Phoenix micro bakery and non-profit. Here’s why bread has me hooked:

    • It’s F-ing Delicious: Freshly baked sourdough or warm, buttery rolls? Total bliss. There’s nothing like tearing into a crusty loaf hot from the oven.
    • It’s Alive: Kneading dough is like partnering with a living, breathing creature. It grows, stretches, and transforms into something magical—AND you get to eat it!
    • It’s Therapy: Shaping loaves or rolling biscuits soothes my soul and sparks creativity. It’s my zen, opening doors to new ideas and calm.

Through “Any Way You Knead It Bakery,” I’m turning this passion into a reality, baking herb and cheese infused breads like thyme-parmesan-roasted garlic, chive-gouda-carmelized onion, and easy savory weekday sandwich breads. The non-profit arm, “Any Way You Knead It Community Foundation,” will share fresh baked goods and offer baking classes to promote bread making skills and mental health to kids and adults, because kneading dough is as healing as it is delicious. Stay tuned for our launch—we can’t wait to share the joy of bread with you!

Fresh vs. Store-Bought, The Health Win

Baking my own bread isn’t just about taste—it’s a health game-changer. Fresh bread, like my sourdough or focaccia, uses simple ingredients: flour, water, salt, and starter. No preservatives, no seed oils, no mystery chemicals. Store-bought loaves often hide additives like dough conditioners or high-fructose corn syrup, which can mess with your gut and energy. My homemade breads, especially when paired with garden herbs, are easier to digest (thanks, fermentation!) and packed with flavor, not fillers. It’s the same reason I make my own peanut butter, condiments, and dressings—control what goes in, feel better when you eat. “Any Way You Knead It” will share this wholesome vibe with every loaf.

homemade condiments, mayo, ketchup, BBQ sauce
Homemade mayo, ketchup, and BBQ sauce are easy and delicious!

    Ditching Store-Bought Junk

Researching new recipes and experimentation time in the kitchen turned me into a homemade food nerd. I started a regular practice of making our everyday staples—jams, jellies, mayo, ketchup, salad dressings—to skip the chemicals and seed oils. (Seriously, my peanut butter with honey and salt is NEXT LEVEL). These aren’t just healthier; they’re stupidly easy. A vinaigrette with garden herbs takes less than 3 minutes, including herb snipping time. Sauces and dressings add luxury vibes and delicious layers to your meals—think scandalously tasty marinades for your meats and veggie dishes, or compound butters with garlic, flavored salts, and fresh herbs—without the toxic junk. Pinterest and I have your back for ideas!

A Taste of My Gap Year Journey

As my gap year unfolded, each knead of dough and swirl of flavored butter taught me more than just recipes—it showed me how to savor life’s simple joys and embrace creativity without fear. My kitchen became a space to connect, experiment, and uncover what truly lights me up. Below, I’m sharing a couple of my favorite creations from this journey: a zesty vinaigrette and super quick dinner rolls to spark your own culinary adventures. Here’s to finding your passion, one delicious moment at a time.

Recipes to Spark Your Own Journey:

    Zesty Lemon-Herb Vinaigrette

Why I Love It: This bright, versatile dressing adds a burst of flavor to any dish, and it’s so easy to whip up!

    Ingredients:

    • ¼ cup olive oil
    • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
    • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
    • 1 small garlic clove, minced
    • 1 tsp fresh thyme or basil, chopped (or ½ tsp dried)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Instructions:

    1. Whisk all ingredients in a small bowl or shake in a jar until combined.
    2. Taste and adjust seasoning. Drizzle over salads, roasted veggies, or grilled fish.
    3. Store in the fridge for up to a week; shake before using.

    Easy Dinner Rolls

Why I Love Them: These rolls are a hug on a plate, bringing warmth and connection to any meal. They’re simple enough for a weeknight but special enough to spark joy and smiles at the table.

    Ingredients:

    • 3 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
    • 2 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

    Instructions:

    1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
    2. Add melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Stir until combined, then gradually add the remaining flour to form a soft dough.
    3. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 3–5 minutes until smooth and elastic. (This is a great step to enjoy the calming rhythm of kneading!)
    4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
    5. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape into balls and place in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
    6. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 375°F.
    7. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden. Brush with melted butter for a soft, glossy finish. Serve warm.

  • Yoga and Meditation: A Journey to Soul Whispers and Sweaty Mishaps

Yoga and Meditation: A Journey to Soul Whispers and Sweaty Mishaps

Hitting Pause to Find My Flow

Picture this: I’m perched in an open-air yoga shala, high in the jungle canopy of Nosara, Costa Rica, at the Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort. The air hums with jungle birds and the occasional thunk of a coconut smacking the roof. Twenty-five spiritual seekers, including my new friend—an Instagram-famous psychic medium named Malaurie—are setting intentions under a pink sunrise. I’m a total yoga retreat newbie, no clue what’s coming, but the universe practically screamed, “Go to Costa Rica, Amy!” So here I am, chasing magic, adventure, and maybe a few answers.

This is my gap year, my rebellion against the soul-sucking grind of a 25-year finance career that left me drained. I ditched the corporate hamster wheel to explore passions, find my true north, and listen to the universe’s whispers. This retreat? A wild leap into the unknown, sparked by Malaurie’s invite and the allure of Costa Rica’s jungles. It was transformative—new friends, new countries, vivid dreams that dropped clues like breadcrumbs, a hilariously sweaty hot yoga flop back home, and a fated studio discovery that felt like destiny. Yoga (breathing with purpose through poses) and meditation (quieting the noise to hear your soul) became my gap-year compass, guiding me to purpose, healing my body alongside my daily CrossFit gym habit, and introducing me to the most magical yogis. Let’s dive in.

The Costa Rica Retreat: My First Yoga Adventure

The Bodhi Tree Yoga Resort was straight out of a dream. Jungle bungalows, open-air shalas for sunrise flows, and a cozy indoor space for stormy nights—like the epic thunderstorm that crashed our sound bath, rain roaring like a cosmic drumroll. The food? Fresh, natural, and stupidly delicious. The bar had light refreshments (think kombucha and smoothies, and plenty of margaritas!). Dirt paths led to adventures—hikes, beaches, or just vibing with the jungle’s pulse. Our crew? Twenty-five strangers-turned-friends, all chasing spiritual vibes, connected by Malaurie through many different intersections.

One morning, I’m catching a few more winks in that ‘in-between’ space that comes between sleep and fully awake. Then the dreams—vivid, wild, and oddly specific. First, an old woman in a red robe, silver hair flowing, rocked in a chair and said, “You’ll be working for Johnson Concrete within three months.” I blinked, like, “Lady, who are you, and what’s with the concrete?!” She repeated it, slower, like I was missing the point and a little slow lol. The next morning, I dreamt of my friend Nicholle dressed like Audrey Hepburn in a yellow dress, pregnant, rocking a cute 60s style bob. Woke up, happened to check Instagram, and bam—her daughter Audrey’s 18th birthday post. Mind blown. The final night, I saw intricate, light-brown henna tattoos covering a new friend’s hands—stunning, but weird, since she is completely ink-free.

These dreams planted a seed. I knew I had to bring yoga and meditation home, not just as a hobby but as a lifeline. Try this: Find a local yoga class or an online session. No retreat needed—just an open heart and a willingness to stretch.

The Hot Yoga Hiccup: A Sweaty, Hilarious Misadventure

Back home, I hit Google to find a yoga studio. Easy, right? Wrong. I signed up for a hot yoga class, clueless that it’s basically yoga in a sauna. Picture me, slipping on my mat, sweating buckets, gasping like I’m running a marathon in hell. The instructor says, “If it’s too hard, stay where you are,” and I’m thinking, “F yes, I’m staying on this floor forever.” Except lying down in 105-degree heat is its own torture. Does anyone know how HARD that shit is?! I was a newbie, overconfident from my Costa Rica glow, and this class humbled me fast.

I laughed at myself, though—sprawled on the mat, looking like a drowned rat. That flop taught me growth comes with wobbles. It pushed me to keep searching for my yoga home, not quit. Reflect: Think of a time you tried something new and face-planted. How did it nudge you toward the right path? Write it down.

Finding My Yoga Home: A Tattoo-Inspired Sign

Scrolling studio websites felt an endless sea—nothing clicked. Then I landed on a site that stopped me cold. The logo? A circle of intricate, light-brown design, identical to the henna tattoo I saw on H’s hands in my dream. Chills. Tears. The universe was winking, and I was listening.

This studio was magic. Welcoming vibes, classes like Kundalini, slow flow yoga, and stretch-and-sound sessions with singing bowls that made my soul hum. My teacher, a healer and emotions coach, was glorious—part yogi, part wizard, guiding me to dig deeper into my practice and myself. This wasn’t just a studio; it was home, proof that dreams and passions lead you where you’re meant to be.

Challenge: Notice a sign this week—a song, a symbol, a gut feeling. Act on it and see where it takes you.

The Gifts of Yoga and Meditation: Soul Whispers and Sound Healing

Yoga’s intentional breathing through poses grounds me, especially paired with my CrossFit grind (CrossFit for strength, yoga for flow). Meditation quiets the noise, letting my soul’s whispers come through loud and clear. Sound healing with singing bowls? Pure magic, like a reset button for my spirit. Kundalini sparked energy I didn’t know I had, flow yoga released tension, and stretch-and-sound sessions brought calm I could carry. My teacher’s emotional coaching tied it all together, helping me unpack feelings and find clarity.

These aren’t just exercises—they’re tools to hear your soul and align with your purpose, which for me ties to my gap-year quest and my Gap Year Movement. Try this: Set a timer for 5 minutes of deep breathing or a guided meditation (Moonly and Headspace apps have great guided meditations and sound healing recordings). Notice what bubbles up. That’s your soul talking.

    Keep Stretching Toward Your Truth

From a Costa Rica jungle retreat to a sweaty hot yoga disaster to a studio that felt like fate, yoga and meditation became my gap-year compass. They healed my body, boosted my strength alongside CrossFit, and connected me to magical humans who light up my path. They’re not about perfection—they’re about listening to your soul and finding your way.

I’m still chasing passions, from yoga to my bakery dream, Any Way You Knead It (stay tuned for that!). My Gap Year With Amy blog and book share this journey, and I’d love for you to join me. Try a yoga or meditation class this week—online, in a studio, or in your backyard with your chickens clucking along. Write a sentence about how it feels and tell someone (or your dog). Share your yoga or meditation stories in the comments below—I’m all ears. The universe is cheering, and so am I.

  • Mini Gaps: Your Secret Weapon Against Burnout

Mini Gaps: Your Secret Weapon Against Burnout

Ever feel like the daily grind is sucking the soul right out of you? You’re chained to your desk, drowning in deliverables, meetings, and that never-ending ping of Slack notifications—whether you’re in the office, working remote, or schlepping through an airport for a “quick” business trip. It’s a one-way ticket to burnout city, population: you, with a side of piss poor results. But what if I told you that stepping away for just an afternoon could flip your perspective, calm your frazzled nerves, and make you a happier, sharper human? Let’s talk about mini gaps—your new best friend for dodging burnout and rediscovering the magic hiding in plain sight.

Why You Need to Hit Pause

woman checking emails on her phone with backdrop of beach vacation sunset
Do you insist on checking email during your vacation?

If you’re the type who can’t take a week-long vacation without sneaking a peek at your inbox to make sure your team hasn’t accidentally set the office on fire (or, worse, missed a deadline), this is for you. I get it—corporate culture worships the hustle. It’s all about staying plugged into the company’s breathing internet life force, 24/7, no matter where you are. But here’s the deal: working yourself into a zombie state doesn’t make you a hero. It makes you tired, cranky, and, frankly, less effective. Taking a break isn’t slacking—it’s strategic. It’s about shifting your perspective so you can come back clearer, smarter, and ready to crush it.

Plus, stepping away gives your team a chance to flex their muscles. Let them handle your responsibilities for a hot minute. Trust them. Set clear expectations and deliverables before you bounce—think of it as a gift to your colleagues and a masterclass in leadership. You’re not just saving your own sanity; you’re showing everyone else it’s okay to unplug. Be the example, not the martyr.

The Rut That’s Killing Your Vibe

Let’s be real: doing the same shit day after day at a breakneck pace is a recipe for disaster. You’re not a robot, even if your calendar makes you feel like one. The relentless cycle of emails, Zoom calls, gym sessions, and adulting tasks like grocery runs or wrangling kids creates stress, anxiety, and performance that’s about as inspiring as a soggy sandwich. Most of the work we do—whether it’s solving problems at the office, pushing through a workout, or navigating family life—requires creativity, quick thinking, and people skills. When you’re stuck in a rut, your brain turns to mush, and your edge? Gone.

Taking time to step away isn’t just nice—it’s mission-critical. It shakes up your thinking, recharges your batteries, and reminds you there’s a world beyond your laptop screen. Without it, you’re not just burning out; you’re shortchanging your potential.

    Start Small, Win Big

Okay, I hear you: “A vacation? In this economy? With this workload?” Chill. You don’t need to jet off to Bali for two weeks to feel human again. Start small. I’m talking a long weekend—snag a Friday or Monday to give yourself two short workweeks. Or take a single day. Hell, even an afternoon can work wonders. These mini gaps (yep, I’m sticking with that term because it’s dope) are like hitting the reset button on your mind, body, and soul.

Think of it as a mini vacay, no passport required. The goal isn’t to check off some bucket-list adventure; it’s to break the monotony and let your brain breathe. One well-timed afternoon off can make you feel like you’ve been gone for a week—in a good way.

    Hiking in the Desert
Take a weekend getaway in nature to gap on a time budget!

    Company “Fun” Isn’t Your Reset

Your boss already knows breaks are powerful. Why do you think they organize those team-building events? Ever been to a company volunteer day, a spring training game with your work crew, or a fancy team dinner on a business trip? If you’ve got cool coworkers, those can be a blast. But let’s not kid ourselves—they’re still work. You’re still “on,” networking, making small talk, and probably checking your phone for updates. It’s not the same as a true break where you get to call the shots.

No haterade here for team events—they’ve got their place. But they’re not your reset. Your employer gets the value of shaking things up, so take a page from their playbook and prioritize your own mini gap. You deserve a break that’s all about you, not the company agenda.

    Your Adult Field Trip Playbook

retro bus with a sign on the side reading 'are you ready for your adult gap year?' and a message on the top saying Get In!
Adult Gap Year Field Trip Bus

Remember field trip days in elementary school? You’d pile onto a bus, rock your favorite T-shirt, and spend the day exploring something new—maybe a zoo, a museum, or that random farm where you learned to milk a cow. It was magic. Guess what? You can recreate that as an adult, and it’s just as awesome.

Pick a day next week and treat it like a field trip. Get up early like it’s a normal workday, but instead of logging into your inbox, put on something fun—those sneakers you love or that funny and kinda inappropriate T-shirt that makes strangers smirk. Then get out there and explore. Here’s some inspiration to get you started:

    • Hit up a historical site nearby and geek out on the stories—bonus points if they let you churn butter or try on old-timey clothes.
    • Take a guided tour of a local oddity, like a shoe factory, a brewery, or a creepy abandoned building (if that’s your jam).
    • Go on a food quest: hit the top three nacho spots in your town, rate the dishes from 1 to 3, and post your reviews online for the world to see.
    • Wander a botanical garden, sketch some weird plants, and pretend you’re a Victorian botanist for a hot second.
    • Visit a quirky museum—think vintage arcade games, taxidermy, or UFO conspiracies—and soak in the weirdness.

The activity doesn’t matter as much as the vibe. It’s about breaking out of your rut and seeing the world from a fresh angle. You’re not just killing time; you’re rediscovering the spark that’s been buried under your to-do list.

    Nacho average day off!

    How to Make It Happen

Ready to plan your field trip? Keep it simple so you don’t overthink it:

    • Pick a day: Next week, carve out a full day, a half-day, or even a few hours. Put it in your calendar like it’s a non-negotiable meeting.
    • Choose your adventure: Pick one thing that sounds fun. Doesn’t have to be fancy—a walk through a new neighborhood or a dive bar with a jukebox counts.
    • Set the mood: Wear something that makes you feel alive. Leave your work phone on silent (or, better yet, at home).
    • Stay open: Let the day surprise you. Chat with a stranger, try something new, and see what unfolds.

Pro tip: Tell one person about your plan—a friend, your partner, or even your cat. Saying it out loud makes it real, and they’ll probably hype you up.

What to Notice When You Break Free

One day can change everything. It’s not just about skipping work—it’s about cracking open your routine and letting the world show you something new. As you’re out there on your field trip, pay attention. Look for synchronicities — the little moments that feel like the universe is winking at you. Maybe you overhear a conversation that sparks an idea for work, or you stumble across a bookstore that feels like it was made for you. These are the signs you’re doing it right.

Schedule your mini gap now. Don’t overthink it—just pick one thing that sounds like a blast and do it. Then, as you’re out there, ask yourself:

    • Who did you meet? Maybe a chatty tour guide or a random dog-walker with a wild story.
    • What surprised you? A weird fact about your town, a dish you didn’t expect to love, or a view that stopped you in your tracks.
    • What details stood out? The stuff that’s usually background noise in your life—like birds chirping, the smell of fresh pancakes, or a mural you’ve never noticed.
    • How do you feel? Are you still stressing about that project deadline, or can you finally breathe and soak in the moment?
    Find the magic 🙂

    The Ripple Effect

Here’s the kicker: one mini gap can set off a chain reaction. That single afternoon or day off doesn’t just recharge you for the moment—it rewires how you approach your life. You start noticing the small joys you’ve been sleepwalking through. You get better at saying “no” to the grind and “yes” to yourself. And when you show up back at work, you’re not just a cog in the machine—you’re a human with fresh ideas, clearer focus, and a vibe that says, “I’ve got this.”

Your coworkers will notice. Your boss might even raise an eyebrow (in a good way). And your team? They’ll see you modeling what it looks like to prioritize your well-being, and maybe they’ll start taking their own mini gaps. You’re not just saving yourself from burnout—you’re starting a quiet revolution.

    Your Move

So, what’s it gonna be? A nacho crawl? A dusty historical tour? A solo hike where you pretend you’re in a movie? Pick one thing, schedule it for next week, and make it happen. Don’t let your brain talk you out of it with excuses about deadlines or laundry. The world is waiting to show you something new, and your sanity deserves it.

  • Words, Passions, and Finding Your Soul’s True North

Words, Passions, and Finding Your Soul’s True North

Ever feel like life’s a giant jigsaw puzzle with a missing piece that’s probably under the couch? Spoiler: that piece is hiding in the stuff that sets your soul on fire. For me, that’s words—writing, talking, storytelling, reading, you name it. My whole life, words have been my paintbrush, my compass, my slightly-too-loud party trick (sorry, Mom and Dad). Leaning into this passion hasn’t just been fun – it lit up my soul’s purpose, guiding me from corporate communication teams to gap-year epiphanies.

But let’s be real: sometimes my wordy superpower goes rogue, landing me in uncomfortable situations every now and then. I believe that those fumbles are part of the journey to finding your true direction. If you don’t mess up a few times along the way, then you probably aren’t living big and boldly enough. Here’s how chasing a passion – my love for words—helped me find my soul’s true north.

From Kid Scribbles to Soul-Sparking Stories

As a kid, I was that child—scribbling wild tales about talking zebras, churning out reports on far away lands (some real and some make believe), and devouring books like they were candy. My parents begged me to stop talking some days, citing the offense (their words: “diarrhea of the mouth”). Teachers loved my contributions but pleaded for silence in that other, quiet part of class. (Still working on that one—ask my husband.) Words were my playground, my way of making sense of the world. Fast-forward to adulthood, and that kid with the pen is still in there, whispering, “Hey, let’s tell a story.” Writing—whether it’s journaling, morning pages, or this blog—has become my therapy, my mirror, and my map. It’s how I dig deep, uncover insights, and figure out what my soul’s trying to say.

    • Try this: Jot down a 5-minute stream-of-consciousness about something you love. No editing, just flow. What pops up? That’s your soul waving hello.

Words That Opened Doors (and taught me balance)

In my corporate life, words were what I used every day to do my job. They were the currency for everything that meant success in that business; emails to clients and internal teams, sales pitches, performance reviews, fee schedule changes, interviews, the list goes on. We painted pictures with emails, sold ideas with well-placed questions and positioning of benefits, and left strategic silences that made folks think. But here’s the kicker: those skills weren’t just for boardrooms. They were practice for my true calling—writing to inspire, connect, and light the way for others.

    • Pro tip: Next time you’re in a convo, try listening more than you talk. Drop a thoughtful question, really listen to the answer, and watch the magic unfold.

The Gap Year Epiphany: Writing as a Portal

When I ditched the corporate grind for a gap year, I didn’t just rest—I rediscovered my passion for writing. Journaling became my morning ritual, spilling out dreams, fears, and random musings about life. I started this blog, Gap Year With Amy – A Guide for Professional Adults, to share the magic of hitting pause to rest, reset, and explore. Writing about everyday moments—collabing with my husband on a gourmet meal, challenging teenage parenting situations, gardening fights with birds and bugs, or laughing over craft beers—helped me see life from a new angle. It’s like stepping through Alice’s looking glass: suddenly, the world’s different, and your purpose feels closer. My words, once scattered in emails and random meetings, now weave stories that spark joy and nudge others toward their own soul-pull work.

    • Reflect: What’s one passion you’ve shelved? Dust it off for a week. Write about what it stirs in you. That’s your compass pointing true north.

Passions Aren’t Just Fun—They’re Your GPS

Here’s the wisdom I’ve earned through a few decades of word-wrangling: passions like writing aren’t just hobbies. They’re your soul’s GPS, guiding you to your intended work. My love for words led me from chatty kid to corporate executive to gap-year blogger and author, and now to dreaming up a micro bakery that’s as much about mental health as it is about bread. Every story I tell, every connection I spark, feels like a step toward greater purpose. But those times I’ve overshared, misspoken, or rambled? They’ve taught me humility, mindfulness, and the art of a good apology. Your passions—painting, hiking, whatever—work the same way. Lean in, embrace the wobbles, and let them guide you to who you’re meant to be. No pressure, just play.

    • Challenge: Pick one passion and spend an hour on it this week. No goals, no “it has to be something.” Just let it lead. Where does it take you?

    Keep Chasing the Sparks

Your soul’s purpose isn’t some far-off treasure—it’s in the stuff that makes you lose track of time. For me, most of the time it’s words: the stories I hear and get to tell, the laughs I share with all kinds of amazing people, the moment when a coaching queue or question lands just right. My gap year taught me to stop chasing “practical” and start chasing alive. So, whether you’re writing, dancing, or perfecting your sourdough game, lean into what lights you up. Your passions are trying to tell you something. Listen, play, and let them guide you home. Oh, and if you’ve got a story to share? I’m all ears (or eyes). Drop it in the comments—my chatty soul can’t wait to connect.

    • Your move: What’s one passion that’s tugging at your heart? Give it some love this week, then write a sentence about what it taught you. Share it with someone—at the very least your dog. The universe is cheering you on.
