Gap Year for Adults: Stepping into a Life Full of Magic and Possibility

For 25 years, I built a successful career in finance — tackling meaningful challenges, collaborating with brilliant people, and growing in ways I’m truly proud of. I was capable, trusted, and driven. Yet over time, I began craving something deeper. I sensed there was more wonder, creativity, and aliveness waiting for me beyond the familiar routines.

I made the boldest decision of my life: I stepped away from my corporate role with confidence and clarity. That leap didn’t just change my path — it accidentally sparked The Gap Year Movement, a vibrant call for grown adults to pause, rediscover what lights them up, and design a life that feels big, beautiful, and fully their own.

Hiking in the Desert

My first year — lovingly called Gap Year Hard by my husband — was a whirlwind of transformation. Now I’m deep into Gap Year Harder, and I’m excited to share every step with you. If you’re craving more from life or feeling ready for a meaningful shift, you’re in the right place.

They’re a powerful tool for anyone craving a life shift, no matter their age. It’s a chance to step through the looking glass and see the world—and yourself—from a wildly different angle.

Quitting the Grind, Finding the Magic

My 25 years in finance brought incredible growth, lifelong friendships, and coast-to-coast adventures. But eventually, the daily rhythm began to feel misaligned with the life I wanted to live. The pace, the constant demands, and the sense that something essential was missing started weighing on me. My body and intuition were sending clear signals that it was time for a new chapter.

Instead of pushing through, I listened. One day, I made the decision to step away. And you know what? The world didn’t fall apart. After 25 years of dedication, I had earned the space to pause, breathe, and realign. That single choice opened the door to freedom, curiosity, and possibility.

Chasing What Lights Me Up

Suddenly, I had the gift of time — wide-open time — to explore what truly brings me joy. We hiked the red rocks of Sedona regularly, letting the ancient landscape awaken something wild and grounded in us. I baked batch after batch of sourdough bread, sharing warm loaves with family and friends like a proud bread dealer. Our CrossFit community became a source of strength, friendship, and personal growth.

Then came Thailand — an absolute game-changer. I stepped into my first Muay Thai session at a vibrant gym in Hua Hin and felt completely alive. The rhythm, the challenge, and the pure energy reminded me what it feels like to show up as my fullest self. We wandered night markets, savoring som tam’s bright spice and khao soi’s rich coconut warmth — each new flavor a delicious clue to the life I was creating.

I stopped trying to control every detail and started trusting the Universe. The magic that followed — new connections, spontaneous adventures, and moments of pure beauty — confirmed that life has beautiful timing when we create space for it.

A gap year isn’t about having every answer upfront. It’s about saying yes to new experiences, passions, and perspectives that help you remember who you really are when you’re no longer tied to old scripts.

Gap Year Hard wasn’t always sunshine and roses, but it was pretty damn good, and exactly what I needed. There were days of uncertainty and moments where I questioned everything. Yet those challenges taught me resilience, adaptability, and the power of beginner’s mind.

I embraced language learning again, pushed my fitness goals (because why shouldn’t we want to be the absolute fittest version of ourselves?), and opened myself up to new cuisines and cultures. Every small win reminded me I was rebuilding confidence on my own terms.

This year showed me that reinvention doesn’t require perfection — it just requires courage and curiosity.

Through this journey, a few powerful lessons have emerged:

  • Trust the timing. Things unfold when you create the space.
  • Small yeses create big momentum. One new class, one hike, one trip — it all adds up.
  • Your next version of yourself is waiting. You don’t have to stay stuck in old identities.
  • Community matters. Surrounding yourself with supportive people (even across the world) makes everything richer.
  • A big, beautiful life is built one intentional day at a time.

In today’s world, we’re living longer and redefining what midlife and beyond can look like. More professionals are choosing intentional breaks to recharge, realign, and return stronger — or to create entirely new paths.

This movement is about giving yourself permission to pause without apology. It’s for the woman who has raised kids while climbing the career ladder. The man who has succeeded meeting his career goals, but feels something missing. Anyone who wants fewer regrets and more stories worth telling.

Gap Year Movement: Join the Ride

This is the heart of The Gap Year Movement: grown adults choosing courage over comfort, saying yes to what lights them up, and trusting that the next chapter will unfold beautifully.

It’s not about having a perfect plan or unlimited resources. It starts with small, brave steps — a new trail on the weekend, signing up for that class you’ve always wanted, or booking a trip that excites you. The magic lives in those yes moments.

Whether you’re feeling ready for change, craving more adventure, or simply want to live with fewer regrets, this movement is for you. I’m deep in Gap Year Harder right now and would love for you to join me on the journey.
